Wenonah
Wilms (Ojibwe/Dakota) has written six feature-length
screenplays and over a dozen short scripts in the last five years.
Her script, Beaded Road, based loosely on her grandmother's
experiences in government boarding school, was selected by the
2006 Tribeca All Access Connects professional development program
at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival in New York. She wrote the screenplay
for Sunshine with support from IFP-Minnesota. Wilms lives
in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she works at a homeless shelter
for indigenous children and as a graphic artist.
"Screenwriting has been a way for me to tell my stories with
the intention of having other people bring their visions and talents
together to make something live and breathe. It's like dreaming
a dream, then having people around you construct it and bring
your characters, your dreamed-up world, to life. It's such a unique
form of writing in the way that it has certain structure and rules,
which makes being creative within those boundaries that much more
of a challenge, which is something I truly love."
