 Ernest
Webb (Cree) is a producer, executive producer and director. He is the co-founder, with Catherine Bainbridge, of Rezolution Pictures International, an award-winning Aboriginal film and television production company in Montreal. In 2010 Webb directed the six-part documentary series Down the Mighty River, taking viewers down the wild Rupert River in the last summer before it is re-routed for a new hydro-electric project, and changing the Cree communities and the river system forever. It was runner-up for the 2010 Gemini award for Best Documentary Series.
Webb has worked closely with Cree director and writer Neil Diamond. In 2009 he was co-director and producer of the docudrama The Last Explorer and executive producer for Diamond’s film Reel Injun. Critically acclaimed, with premieres at Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto and SXSW in Austin, in 2010 Reel Injun received three Gemini Awards from the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television and was runner-up for two others. Webb’s earlier producing credits, with Diamond as director, include the award winning documentaries Heavy Metal: A Mining Disaster in Northern Quebec and One More River.
Webb has also worked extensively in developing series for television in Canada. He produced the recent APTN pilot for Mohawk Girls: The Series, based on Tracey Deer’s short fiction Escape Hatch and her award-winning feature documentary Mohawk Girls, which Webb also produced. Three seasons of Dab Iyiyuu, a series focusing on Cree culture and traditional knowledge, which Webb co-wrote, co-directed and co-produced, also aired on APTN. Webb was the executive producer of Moose TV, a half-hour comedy series that aired on Showcase TV.
Webb serves on the editorial board of The Nation, a Cree news magazine published by Beesum Communications, a publishing company Webb founded with William Nicholls and Catherine Bainbridge in 1993. Webb began his media career in Mistissini, Quebec, as a producer for Cree Radio Network, later working as an announcer of CBC North's daily morning Cree-language radio program Winschgaoug. He was born in Moose Factory, Ontario, raised in Chisasibi, Quebec, and lives in Montreal.
