Jim
Virga teaches at the University of Georgia's Grady
College of Journalism and Mass Communication, in Athens, Georgia.
His film Dancing On Mother Earth won the Eastman Kodak
Best Documentary Award in 2004 at the Indian Diaspora Film Festival
in New York. He is at work on his next documentary, to be filmed
in Bolivia. Virga was active as a photojournalist for fourteen
years, focusing on the Caribbean and Central America and working
primarily for Fort Lauderdale, Florida's Sun-Sentinel. Virga became
interested in filmmaking while teaching photojournalism at Syracuse
University, where he received an MA in Visual and Interactive
Communications. He was born in Brooklyn, New York.
"I hope to tell stories that are overlooked by the masses.
One of my goals is to explore how different cultures relate to
the spirit world."
