 Freddy
Treuquil (Mapuche) is a community activist, poet, and
mediamaker from the south of Chile. He is a founder of the Mapuche
community media organization Kurruf Newentuaiñ, or "Voice
of the earth that travels in the wind," which has produced
a bilingual newsletter and weekly radio program in Santiago, Chile.
In 2000 the organization collaborated with the Universidad Bolivariana
to produce an eight-part television series called Mapu Rakiduam/The
Other View, the first Native-produced television show broadcast
in Chile. Treuquil co-directed the series, which is bilingual,
in Mapudungun, the language of the Mapuche, and Spanish.
"All the [activists] have come to the conclusion that one
objective of making video, radio, and television is for the other
culture to know us. It is necessary to create a bridge to share
our culture in an educational form, without losing our identity."
