August 2004

Jeannette Paulson HerenikoJeannette Paulson Hereniko has spent much of her career working with independent cinema of the Pacific, and recently produced her first film, The Land Has Eyes, directed by Vilsoni Hereniko. Of her experience as founder of the Hawai'i International Film Festival, which she directed 1980-1996, she says, "I think those were the most meaningful years of my life, working with the people of Hawaii to empower minorities, to have their voices and images seen as equal to Hollywood images." In 1990 Hereniko served as the first director of the Palm Springs International Film Festival, and she now directs the Asia Pacific Media Center of the University of Southern California. Through the center she helped create the website www.asianfilms.org which catalogues new releases from Asia in four languages: Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and English, as well as reprinting articles from the journal Cinemaya that offer critical perspectives on the works. Hereniko serves on the international board of directors of the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) and is president of NETPAC/USA.
