Journalist
and filmmaker Alejandro Landes
premiered Cocalero, a feature documentary about the political
campaign of Bolivia's indigenous president Evo Morales, at the
2007 Sundance Film Festival. Landes formerly worked as an assistant
producer of Oppenheimer Presenta, a weekly news report
broadcast in 17 countries, produced and moderated by Andrés
Oppenheimer, Latin American editor and foreign affairs columnist
of The Miami Herald. Landes became interested in documenting Morales'
political career when Morales, at the time a coca union organizer,
and Bolivian president Goni Sanchez de Lozada were featured on
an episode of Oppenheimer Presenta. While producing television,
Landes also worked as a print journalist, writing articles for
The Miami Herald about the politics of international trade
and the impact of government policies on impoverished populations
in Latin America. Landes received a BA in political economy from
Brown University with the thesis paper, "Charismatic Leadership:
A Study of Fidel Castro." He was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil,
grew up in Quito, Ecuador, and lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
