Filmmaker,
actor, and artist Kelly Byars (Choctaw)
produces films with Ramona Emerson (Navajo). He is currently co-producing
Emerson's film A Return Home, which won the 2007 New Mexico
Governor's Cup Short Documentary Competition in the National Geographic
All Roads category for indigenous film. In 2005, Byars won the
award for Best New Actor at the First Americans In The Arts (FAITA)
Awards, in recognition for his role as mechanic Delbert Tsosie
in A Thief of Time. Originally from Oklahoma, Byars has
lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico for twenty years, where he has
acted in lead roles at the Albuquerque Radio Theatre, Indian Pueblo
Cultural Center, the Riverside Theatre, and Theatre X. An accomplished
sculptor, his work can be seen in the permanent collection of
the Institute of American Indian Arts, in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Byars attends the University of New Mexico, where he is attaining
a Master's degree in Native American Education.
