In 1995, the Native American Film and Video Festival (22-25 September)
featured seventy recent productions, including five world premieres
and fifty U.S. premieres. Drawn from Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia,
Canada, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, and the United States,
the selections presented the cultural life and concerns of more
than forty Native communities in the Americas and Hawai'i. The
works ranged from independent documentaries, short fictions, animations,
experimental media, music videos, PSAs, news features, and radio
and television productions. Themes included "Women's Voices,"
"Spirit of Survival," "New Native Fiction," and "Native Airwaves."
The festival program was chosen by a team of guest selectors---Native
American media makers and cultural activists---and the program
staff of the NMAI's Film and Video Center.
