Shelby Ray (Navajo) is the
youth coordinator of Outta Yer Backpack Media Collective, a community
video program coordinated by Indigenous Action Media and Native
Movement. Outta Yer Backpack distributes portable media kits and
trains members in video production. As youth coordinator, Ray's
responsibilities include mentorship, outreach to spread the use
of the media kits among grassroots Native organizations, and fundraising.
Her own video, Marble Gangsta premiered at the 2006 Southwest
Native American Film and Video Festival, held at the Museum of
Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Arizona. Ray is a member of Youth
of the Peaks, which is part of the Save the Peaks organization,
formed in opposition to the expansion of the Arizona Snowbowl
ski resort in the San Francisco Peaks, north of Flagstaff.
"Filmmaking is a window that is what I see, when I'm behind
the camera. That's what I like about filmmaking."
