Jan Padgett lives in Powell
River, British Columbia, where she coordinates the Powell River
Film Festival and is currently in post-production on a new film,
Teeshoe: A Powell River Story. Her film Klah Ah Men,
co-directed with Evan Adams (Coast Salish), premiered at the Native
American Film and Video Festival in 2003. Padgett recently directed
two films, Sticks and Stones and In Other Words
for the National Film Board series Celebrating Diversity: Resources
for Responding to Homophobia. Sticks and Stones won
First Place in the Diverse Family Systems category at the National
Council on Family Relations Media Awards in 2002. Padgett also
wrote and directed The Reluctant Deckhand, along with a
children's book by the same name. The film won several awards,
including the Jury's Special Prize at the 1997 International Family
Film Festival in Seoul, Korea, and the Golden Sheaf Award for
Best Children's Animation at the 1996 Yorkton Short Film and Video
Festival.
"I am drawn to make films that involve social justice. I
hope that my films will inspire change, and challenge how we look
at our world, our cultures, and our prejudices."
