Zoe Leigh Hopkins (Heiltsuk/Mohawk) is a screenwriter and director of short films who began her career in acting. In 2009, Hopkins was selected by the imagineNATIVE Film & Media Arts Festival to be part of the Embargo Collective, an international group of seven Indigenous filmmakers, brought together to collaborate and challenge one another as they produced seven unusual new films. This group of works, including Hopkins’ Tsi tkahéhtayen/ The Garden, premiered at the 2009 imagineNATIVE festival and was an official selection of the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival and 2011 Native American Film + Video Festival. In 2004, Hopkins’ short film Prayer for a Good Day premiered at the Sundance Film Festival where she was also a Fellow in the Screenwriters Lab with her feature script, Cherry Blossoms (working title). She currently has two features in development with Telefilm Canada. Hopkins has directed several short films for Knowledge Network and music videos for APTN. Recently she was senior producer on the youth documentary series Venturing Forth. Hopkins graduated from Ryerson Polytechnic University with a BAA in Film, and lives and works in Toronto with her husband and son.
