Marcella Ernest (Ojibwe) is a video artist and documentary filmmaker whose work has been exhibited at galleries and film festivals both nationally and internationally. Her most recent projects include a stop-motion short made with cell phone images, Was It a Dream or Was It Facebook?, and an installation video for the Museum of Contemporary Native Art in Santa Fe on the soon-to-be Native saint Kateri Tekakwitha. In 2009, she was co-curator for the group exhibition Here & There: Seeing New Ground at 516 Arts in Albuquerque and a judge at the Santa Fe Indian Market in 2010. She also mentors young filmmakers and is a member of the Future Voices of New Mexico, a program that works with New Mexico high school students to tell stories through film and photography, and of the Tesuque Pueblo Youth Film Group.
Ernest attended the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe and Mills College in Oakland, California. She received her MA from the University of Washington’s Native Voices program, which is a graduate program for indigenous documentary film and new media studies. She is a member of the Bad River Band of Chippewa Indians and currently lives in Santa Fe.
