 Ramona Emerson (Navajo) was a winner of the 2007 New Mexico Governor's Cup Short Documentary Competition which provided production funds for her most recent documentary, A Return Home, which was also funded through the All Roads film project. She is currently in production on her newest documentary, Gambling with Our Future, which is being funded through the 2008 New Vision/New Mexico Contract Awards. Emerson also directed of The Last Trek and Backroad, which was one of the first 10 finalists at the Flicks on 66 Digital Shootout (now Duke City Shootout), in 2000. The film, shot and edited in six days, was awarded the Student Spirit Award at the Indian Summer Film Festival in 2003.
Emerson and husband Kelly Byars (Choctaw) produce films through their company Reel Indian Pictures in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Emerson also works as an editor and director of photography on other independent productions. She is the video production manager for Albuquerque Legal Photo Services, a firm specializing in providing forensic/legal evidence documentation. A member of the Native American Producers Alliance, in January 2009, Emerson was appointed to the New Mexico Governor’s Council on Film and Media Industries. In 2008 she served as Program Manager for the inaugural Talking Stick Film Festival in Santa Fe. Originally from Tohatchi, New Mexico, Emerson received her B.A in Media Arts in 1997 from the University of New Mexico, one of the first two graduates of the program.
