Jason Burlage was born in Waterloo, Iowa, and raised in a small town in southeast Idaho. He studied film in the Media and Theatre Arts program at Montana State University, Bozeman, where his student film, Elvis Lives, won the school’s Galusha Award for Special Merit.
Burlage has worked in Peru as a staff member, and later director, for a program that conducted community service projects in small communities around Cuzco. Mi Chacra, his first feature documentary, was shot in the region in the fall of 2007 and spring of 2008. It profiles the life of a young indigenous man, a farmer and part-time porter on the Inca Trail. Mi Chacra has screened in film festivals and cultural centers in Latin America—Peru, Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico—and in the U.S., Canada, and Taiwan, winning the Grand Prize in the 2010 Banff Mountain Film Festival. Its world premiere was in Starz Denver Film Festival and its New York premiere in the 2010 Margaret Mead Film & Video Festival.
