Jeff Barnaby (Mi’kmaq), an award-winning director of narrative films and music videos, is best known for his recent short films that use unsettling elements of the horror and sci-fi genres to explore aspects of alienation and colonialism. His recent production File Under Miscellaneous, adapted from the poem “Walking Around” by Pablo Neruda, premiered at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival. Barnaby’s The Colony premiered at the 2007 TIFF and was named by the festival as one of Canada’s Top Ten Short Films of 2007. It also won the award for Best Canadian Short Drama at imagineNATIVE Film & Media Arts Festival and Best Short Film at the Whistler Film Festival in British Columbia and at the Winnipeg Aboriginal Film Festival. CBC Television commissioned Barnaby’s From Cherry English, which premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and won three Golden Sheaf Awards at the Yorkton Film Festival.

Barnaby received his BFA in film production from Concordia University. He has been a script reader for Aboriginal Peoples Television Network, and has worked as assistant faculty for courses in film theory and production at Concordia, McGill University, and Dawson College.
