Mexican documentary filmmaker Jose Álvarez studied Law at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Méxcio (UNAM) and worked for twelve years in radio. He was director of the México City radio station Radioactive 98.5 among others. In 2006, his first short film Venus won international recognition, receiving awards both at the Morelia International Film Festival and the Toulouse Latin American Film Festival. In 2009, his feature documentary on the Wixarica (Huichol), Flores en el Desierto, won a special mention by the jury at the Morelia International Film Festival and best photography at the First Peoples Festival in Montreal. Álvarez has recently completed a new feature documentary, Canícula, about Totonac indigenous communities in northern Veracruz, which has screened at several international festivals. He lives and works as an independent filmmaker in Mexico City.
