Philipp Abryutin

Philipp AbryutinPhilipp Abryutin (Chukchi) was born in the Chukotka region of Russia. Growing up, he spent time among indigenous elders and herdsman, fishermen and hunters, travelling across the tundra and coasts of Chukotka with his doctor parents who were part of a mobile medical group. Today, Abryutin makes films that tell the stories of the indigenous people of the Russian North.

Abryutin received his Master’s from the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in Moscow, the oldest film school in the world. His final project, the film Prevention of Repeated Crimes, won the 2008 Spectator Award, given to the best student film at VGIK. The film later received its World Premiere at the 28th Moscow International Film Festival, and had its US premiere at the 2009 Native Cinema Showcase, and screened in 2010 at the Agua Caliente Festival of Native Film and Culture. Abryutin’s short documentary film Ivan and Ivan had its North American premiere at the 2009 ImagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival in Toronto. In 2010 it screened at Trømso International Film Festival and was an official selection of MoMA’s Documentary Fortnight and the SXSW Film + Music Conference. Abryutin, currently working in Russian television, is developing his first feature film while pursuing his Ph.D. in Film Dramaturgy at VGIK.
