"The Last Explorer"

"The Last Explorer"The Last Explorer
(2009, 48 min.) CANADA
Director: Neil Diamond (Cree), Ernest Webb (Cree)
Executive producers: Catherine Bainbridge, Ernest Webb

The film weaves documentary and reenactment to tell the story of filmmaker Diamond’s great-uncle George Elson, who guided the team that mapped a rugged and desolate wild area of Labrador in the early 20th century. Elson’s story is rich with drama, including his participation in an earlier, fatal, expedition to Labrador, and the second, successful, expedition, with its suggestion of an unorthodox romance between Elson and expedition sponsor Minna Hubbard.
