The Inupiat of the village of Shishmaref, located on the tiny barrier island of Sarichef, off Alaska’s Seward Peninsula, are on the front lines of global warming. As rising temperatures thaw the permafrost along the shores and reduce sea ice, allowing higher storm surges, the villagers’ face the destruction of their homes and way of life based on the sea. This documentary tells the moving story of the islanders who must relocate to the mainland in order to survive, facing an uncertain future as some of the first climate-change refugees.
