Crude
(2009, 105 min.) US
Director: Joe Berlinger
In Portuguese and Guarani with English subtitles.
Crude is an inside look at the ongoing $27 billion “rainforest Chernobyl” case, a potentially groundbreaking international lawsuit, in which the Amazon Defense Front takes on Texaco (now Chevron) on behalf of 30,000 indigenous people whose land has been poisoned by the company’s oil processing plants. Presenting a complex situation from the viewpoints of the many entities involved, it brings an important story of environmental peril and human suffering into focus, a searing view of how indigenous peoples’ health and way of life is the ultimate “true cost” of crude.
