"Birdwatchers"

"Birdwatchers"Birdwatchers
(2008, 108 min.) BRAZIL
Director: Marco Bechis
In Guarani and Portuguese with English subtitles.

A powerful drama examines the continuing effects of colonialism on an indigenous community. On location in Brazil’s Matto Grosso do Sul, Guarani-Kaiowa community members play characters loosely based on themselves.  In an effort to reclaim a section of their land, a group from the reserve sets up a camp on land adjoining that of a fazendero , or wealthy farmer. When a young shaman’s apprentice and the daughter of a fazendero  develop a friendship,  the results encompass issues of race, class, land rights, the environment and clashing worldviews that define contemporary life in the Amazon.
